Fruit and Veggies 2 Spring 2008 Chairperson's Message

Warm weather finally returned to upstate New York with crocuses, daffodils and most of all sunshine!

The three largest efforts this winter were our Strategic Plan, Society for Nutrition Education (SNE), and our Annual Meeting. Our strategic plan was put in place this winter. Many thanks to a terrific board for their ideas and dedication in the completion of this document. Objectives and an action plan were identified to meet the goals of the NYSNC.

Our goals include the promotion of cross agency communication, building a membership of representative agencies, dissemination of reliable sources of nutrition information, professional development, and efforts to influence state and federal nutrition policy.

The process for application and affiliation with SNE is moving forward. The NYSNC has about 10 SNE members which will help the process. All of the paperwork is together and being processed. This includes our membership directory, bylaws, articles of incorporation, officers, minutes and agenda from the most recent meeting.

The advantages of SNE are significant including networking at the annual conference, reciprocal links on the SNE website, other state nutrition councils, and being represented on the Council of Affiliates.

Our Annual Meeting and Conference is being hosted by Syracuse University, on Friday, May 30th, 10am-4pm. The Annual Business Meeting and lunch is at the Sheraton University Inn. Many thanks to Linda Murphy and Tanya Horacek for organizing.

Presentations will be from faculty and the grant recipient. Look for registration forms online, in your departments, through your local NYSDA districts, and on the NYSDA e-calendar.

Another area of interest is affiliation with NY Farms (www.nyfarmsinfo.org)

NY Farms coordinates and encourages interaction between NYS farmers and consumers. Additionally it builds strong networks and alliances between organizations and agencies, and act as an information clearinghouse. You can see that our goals are similar.

Some other items of note include:

Membership in Cornell Nutrition Works is free to all and is available to the NYSNC membership. Go to: www.nutritionworks.cornell.edu Registration is now open for “Preventing Childhood Obesity: An Ecological Approach”
April 30 – June 10, 2008.
Course fee is $150.

Linda Murphy attended and exhibited for the NYSNC at the 29th Annual Nutritional Concerns Conference “Food for Thought”, April 16, 2008, Albany, NY.

We are looking for and welcome participation on our BOD from liaisons. Those positions currently open are for Family and Consumer Sciences and the Food Bank.

In closing we look forward to a strong organization as defined by our board participation, membership, constitution and bylaws, and our strategic plan.
